Located in North Melbourne, the Meat Market was built in 1880 and is a grade one heritage-listed building with enormous character and history. The cobbled bluestone floor in the main hall and the barrel vault ceiling hark back to a time when it was operated as commercial meat market.

Recognising the historic value of the building, the Meat Market was purchased by the State of Victoria’s former Arts Victoria body. The building opened as a craft centre in 1979 and was officially named the Meat Market Craft Centre in 1985. In 1998, the building became the Metro Craft centre and early use of the facility as a performing arts space was established.

The building received a substantial renovation and commenced management by the City of Melbourne’s Arts Department in 2005. In 2015, a dedicated management team was appointed to develop the venue into an arts and cultural space. With 50 arts businesses and individuals operating from the site, Meat Market is an important hub for arts development and presentation within Melbourne’s thriving contemporary arts scene.

Cancellation Policy

Delegates who find themselves unable to attend the Museums Galleries Australia National Conference 2018 after submitting their online registration are most welcome to nominate a substitute. All substitutions and cancellations must be made by email to

Cancellations received before / on Friday 4 May 2018 will be refunded, less an administration fee of $99. Cancellations received after Friday 4 May 2018 are not refundable. Exceptions are at the discretion of the Organising Committee.
All hotel booking cancellations MUST be made in writing to Cancellations received after Thursday, 3 May 2018 will be charged by the hotel according to their cancellation policy.


Payment of Fees

All conference and function payments must be received prior to the conference.



Registration fees do not include insurance of any kind. It is strongly recommended that participants take out their own general travel insurance. It is suggested that the insurance policy should also cover loss of fees/deposit, airfares, accommodation charges, medical expenses, loss or damage to personal property and repatriation expenses. The organisers do not take responsibility for any delegate failing to insure.



A list of participants will be produced which includes individuals’ details such as name, organisation, state and twitter handle. You will be asked for permission for your details to be included when you register.



The conference registration information is correct at the time of publishing. However, the organisers reserve the right to change the information where necessary without notice.

In the event of industrial disruptions, the conference and the organisers accept no responsibility.



Recommended dress for the conference is smart casual for all conference sessions and the social functions.


Catering and Dietary Requirements

Morning and afternoon teas and lunches will be provided amongst the Trade Exhibition. If you have not already notified Conference Logistics of any special dietary requirements (eg. vegetarian), please do so as soon as possible by emailing

Dietary requests will be catered for to the best of the venue’s ability. Individuals with severe allergies are requested to advise Conference Logistics of their requirements prior to the conference, and bring any allergy medication (EpiPen, Phenergan, etc.) as prescribed by your doctor to the conference and any associated function. Whilst due care is taken by the organisers and venue, individuals must take primary responsibility for their own health.


No Smoking Policy

All the rooms and event spaces for MGA2018 are non-smoking.

Visa Applications

All visitors to Australia (except for New Zealand passport holders) must have a valid visa. Please refer to the following documents for more information:

It is suggested that all visitors should apply for a visa at least two months prior to their intended date of departure, and four months prior for people with character or health concerns.
