The theme for the 2018 conference is ‘Agents of Change’.

Join us for the 22nd annual Museums Galleries Australia National Conference to debate, discuss, share and network with creative professionals.

We are hosting this year’s conference in a heritage building, the former Meat Market in North Melbourne, just a short walk or tram ride from the Melbourne CBD.  You will find like-minded and dissenting opinions to challenge and inspire, among a diverse mix of museum and gallery people, industry supporters, government, universities, the media, and other creative professionals. Whether you are working or volunteering in the sector or keen to collaborate with the creative industries, this gathering is for you.  We bring together museum and gallery staff, volunteers, consultants and sole traders, board members, emerging professionals, mentors and mentees.

As participants in our conference, you are the ‘Agents of Change’.  We have designed an environmentally-friendly and socially-aware conference, with local social enterprise catering, and reduced waste with your choice to opt-into an electronic-only program, or a hard-copy program printed with eco-friendly inks on recycled paper.

The program will include a mix of formats to encourage discussion and debate about the role we do, could or should play in museums and galleries to effect positive social change.

This will be a welcoming conference, designed to bring networks together during sessions and in the social program.  We have programmed a range of social events hosted by museums and galleries in the centre of Melbourne and beyond. These include a special Welcome Reception, a Conference Dinner, ‘birds of a feather’ networking, speed-dining, walking tours, cultural treats and surprises along the way.  We will also share your ‘Agents of Change’ stories in post-conference follow-ups, to share better-practice and continue conversations.

Sub-themes within this overall theme of ‘Agents of Change’ include:

  • Breaking down barriers
    Including issues of diversity, gender, race, privilege, equity, and social justice, and telling difficult stories.
  • Making connections
    Including the distinction between art and science, metro and regional, the relationship between the commercial and not-for-profit sectors.
  • Places of engagement
    Including ways in which museums and galleries address climate change, discrimination, and fact versus opinion.
  • Championing innovation
    Including new ways to manage and display collections, new curatorial techniques, digital museums and galleries, and thinking differently about professional development.
